Football's Offensive Eruption Not Enough to Top UW-Stout

DUBUQUE, Iowa (Duhawks.com) – In 2014 the Duhawks revamped offense fell to UW-Stout despite passing for a then school record 381 yards on offense. Loras (0-2) would match that and some in the 2015 edition on Saturday, Sept. 12, but unfortunately saw the same result in the loss column by a final score of 52-42.

The first half went down as a shootout, with both offenses using big plays to rack up scoring opportunities. UW-Stout (1-1) dominated the first quarter, using short rushing plays and quick possessions to make the most of their opportunities. Loras' offense broke out in the second quarter of play to the tune of 18 points, but allowed the Blue Devils to add 14 more of their own right before the break to lead 28-21.

Neither team found success on defense limiting the opponents' passing game with Loras freshman Nolan Baumhover throwing for 291 yards in the first half. Baumhover also showed off his ability to make plays with his legs, rushing for 37 yards. His recognition of the defensive pressure and willingness to move out of the pocket set the Duhawks up on their second touchdown drive of the game. His 13-yard scramble put the Duhawks on the 44 yard line and set up a 56-yard strike to sophomore Mikey Castoro.

The third quarter saw more of the gun-slinging offenses that was put on display in the opening half of action Both Baumhover and senior Nik Schulte added touchdown passes, but the 17 points allowed to the Blue Devils extended their lead to 10 points heading into the fourth.

Loras made multiple offensive pushes in the fourth quarter, but found themselves unable to sustain drives inside of Stout territory. The Duhawks failed to overcome their own penalties which muffled any momentum they had. With 3:43 to play it appeared as if junior Wes Bowers had returned an interception for a touchdown, but a roughing the passer penalty brought the play back and gave the ball back to the Blue Devils who simply wasted more time off the clock with their running game.

The Duhawk offense had success against the Blue Devil defense, managing to accumulate 792 yards of total offense, which broke the school record of 716 set in 1998. Unfortunately for the Duhawks, their secondary allowed 418 yards and three touchdowns. Defensively, the Duhawk run defense kept their opponent in check most of the day, holding the Blue Devils to 116 yards on 39 carries, a 2.9 yard per attempt average.

Duhawk fans in attendance saw the emergence of both Baumhover and junior Josh Schulte. Baumhover finished the game with 387 passing yards, a school record set by Dylan Jones last season. Schulte accumulated 219 yards on a career-high 15 receptions, and added two touchdowns to his season total.

KEY MOMENTS
Q1 – Loras allowed three passing plays of over 20 yards and two of 18 yards in the first quarter. These big plays gave a boost to the Stout offense.
Q2 – The Blue Devils intercepted a Nolan Baumhover pass, but the Duhawks forced a fumble on the return. This fumble set up the 30-yard touchdown pass to Josh Schulte on the ensuing drive.
Q3 – A 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the Duhawks helped to extend a Blue Devil drive which led to a 25-yard touchdown pass to Brian Alvarez.
Q3 – Nolan Baumhover completed 6-of-7 passing attempts on the Duhawks second drive, leading to the 3-yard touchdown connection with Josh Schulte.
Q3 – Mason Quigley had a field goal attempt blocked, the UW-Stout recovery set-up a touchdown drive
Q4 – Following a 40-yard run from Zach Minch, Loras' drive was stalled by both a holding penalty and an ineligible receiver downfield. These penalties led to a turnover on downs.
Q4 – A potential pick-6 from Wes Bowers was negated by a roughing the passer penalty late in the fourth quarter. This touchdown would've put the Duhawks within three.

THE FRIEDMAN GROUP PLAYER OF THE GAME
Nolan Baumhover | On 45 passing attempts, Baumhover set two school records by passing for 387 yards and three touchdowns. Baumhover now holds the school records for most passing yards in a game, and most passing yards in a game by a freshman.
