Joe Piane

  • A four-year letter winner in cross country and track at Loras College. Well known for his outstanding coaching skills. Piane was a member of the undefeated cross country team his senior year in 1968.

  • Continued his success in cross-country and track and field coaching at the University of Notre Dame. He joined the Notre Dame staff in 1975 as an assistant track coach and physical education instructor and was named head coach the following year. Being a Division I coach he has developed quite a resume. In cross country his team finished in the NCAA Top 10 nine times since 1987. The Irish were Big East men's cross country champions in 1997 and 1999. In 1987 Piane was the NCAA Division I Coach of the Year in cross country and he has been four-time District IV Coach of the Year.

  • In track and field at Notre Dame, Piane led his men's team to be Big East Outdoor Champions in 2000. He also made the Big East Outdoor Track Championships Staff of the Year in 1999 and 2000. Piane is also a six-time Midwestern Collegiate Conference Coach of the Year in both cross country and track.

  • Taking his success and skill even further, Piane was the meet director for the World International Special Olympics. He was head coach for the USA Track and Field Pam American Junior Team and coach of the USA National team competition in England and Ireland.
