Josh Edwards

 

A native of Pella, IA, Josh attended Central College in Pella (1999-2003), where he received his B.A. in Exercise Science and Health Promotion. While at Central he was a four year member of the football team. He also served two years (2001-2003) as an intern in the strength and conditioning department. After graduation he worked one year (2003-2004) as the Assistant Strength coach under Jake Anderson.

Josh attended Winona State University in Winona, MN (2004-2006) to work on his Master of Science in Educational Leadership. While at Winona State he worked as the Graduate Assistant Strength and Conditioning coach for two years. After finishing his schooling Josh stayed at Winona State, changing roles to Director of Football Strength & Conditioning and Defensive Line coach (2006-2007).

During the (2007-2008) school year Josh was the Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach at Drake University in Des Moines, IA. He was in charge of the Men's and Women's Golf and Tennis programs, and assisted with the football program.

Presently, Josh is entering his second year as Head Strength and Conditioning Coach here at Loras College and his first as linebackers coach. Josh handles all the strength, conditioning, agility, and nutritional development for all 21 athletic teams at Loras.

Steve Osterberger - Head Coach

A native of Dubuque, Steve Osterberger begins his fourth season at Loras beginning in 2009. This is his second season as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach with the Duhawks. Osterberger was the Iowa Conference Coach of the Year in 2004 during his tenure at Buena Vista University (2000-2005). Osterberger left Storm Lake, where he spent ten years as a member of the staff, as the third winningest coach in school history.

In addition to his coaching accomplishments, Osterberger also helped institute several community initiatives. He managed the Rockin' Reader program at the local grade schools, implemented the Adopt-A-Highway program for the Beavers, and also organized a local Trick-or-Treat night for the children in the area and his football squad. Since arriving in Dubuque, his team has made three consecutive trips to Albrecht Acres, an area facility which provides services for people with special needs. The Duhawks have pitched in with some manual labor and maintenance to the facility each spring.

Osterberger is a graduate of Drake University, where he earned a degree in sociology. He spent four years as a starting quarterback for the Bulldogs and set 20 offensive records - including net passing yardage - with over 7,000 yards in the air. He earned the Jerry Howlett Memorial Award for Outstanding Athlete at Drake University in 1989. He also earned a master's degree in Administration of Education from Buena Vista University.

Steve and his wife, Lisa, have a daughter Alli (12) and a son Bryce (8). They reside in Asbury, Iowa.

Joe Ashfield - Assistant Coach

Joe Ashfield is in his second season with the Duhawks after a playing a coaching career that has sent him to different corners of the football world. Ashfield's coaching stops include Auckland, New Zealand (North Harbour Pride and New Zealand Haka head coach), Cleveland, Mississippi (Delta State University), Palo Alto, California (Stanford University), and most recently Indianola, Iowa (Simpson College).

 

His playing career (quarterback) also included time in Germany following an intercollegiate career at both Drake University and NCAA III power St. John's University. His duties have included everything from special teams to game plan implementation on both sides of the ball. He also has experience as a recruiting coordinator in Iowa with Simpson College.

 

Joe works primarily with the wide receivers and contributes to the offensive game plans.

 

He lives in Dubuque with his wife Susan.

 

 
Paul Hoffman Image
Paul Hoffman - Assistant Coach

Paul Hoffman is in his fifth season with the Duhawks this year. Hoffman coaches the offensive line and has helped along the careers of all-conference selections Pat Ade, Wes Veach, Bob Roe, and Jon Pereiro in the recent past.

 

Hoffman comes to Loras from Joliet Catholic Academy in Joliet, Ill. At Joliet Catholic, Hoffman was a teacher and coached for the 12-time 5A football state champions in two of their most recent title runs. He also served as the head coach of the boys track and field program for one season. Prior to his four years with the Hilltoppers, he served as a teacher and coach at Lincoln-Way East High School, also in the suburbs of Chicago.

 

He also has experience working at the college level. In 2000, Hoffman coached the tight ends and assisted on the offensive line for Allegheny College.

 

A 1999 graduate of Carthage College, Hoffman graduated with a degree in history. He earned All-CCIW honors in each of his four seasons, first team as a junior and senior, second team as a sophomore, and honorable mention as a freshman. Hoffman was a center for the Redmen, serving as captain his final two years.

 

Paul resides in Mineral Point, Wisconsin with his wife Magda.

 

 
Gavin McMacken Image
Gavin McMacken - Assistant Coach

Gavin McMacken is entering his sixth season on the sideline for the Duhawks and second as defensive coordinator.  McMacken has worked with several key players including 2005 Gagliardi finalist and three-time all-conference selection Ross Dillavou, 2007 All-IIAC pick Zach Wilker, and 2008 All-IIAC pick Kenny Kikilas.

McMacken came to Loras from Alma College in Michigan, where he spent four years as an assistant coach instructing the defensive line and coordinating the academic support programs for the team.
       
He was a three-year starter for the Scots and helped lead the team to a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association title and a berth in the NCAA Division III playoffs.
       
McMacken graduated from Alma in 2000 with a degree in English.  In 2006, he earned his master's degree in athletic administration from Loras.

 
Kyle Westphal Image
Kyle Westphal - Assistant Coach

Kyle Westphal is in his third season with the Duhawks. He works with the defensive backs  and is the special teams coordinator for Loras. Westphal graduated from Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa in 2005 with degrees in Business Administration and Sports Administration following a four year career with their team. As a player at Simpson Kyle was named to the All-IIAC squad three times as a defensive back and also earned All-American honors.

After his career as a player, Kyle attended Northwest Missouri State University during the 2005 and 2006 seasons while he worked towards his masters degree. He worked as both the Wide Receivers Coach and Running Backs Coach in that time. The team went 25-5 over those two seasons and has competed in the NCAA Division II Playoffs in both campaigns, reaching the title game during both playoff runs. Westphal graduated in 2006 with a Master of Science in Education from NMSU.

 

Kyle now resides in Dubuque with his wife Crystal and their two children, seven-year-old daughter Zoey and two-year-old son Kobe.

 
Pat Murphy Image
Pat Murphy - Assistant Coach

Pat Murphy is in his fourth season of coaching at the collegiate level. A graduate of the University of Northern Iowa, Murphy has coached football for over 30 years in Dubuque, his hometown. Murphy served as the Head Football Coach at Dubuque Senior High School from 1989-2003. His role with the Duhawks is with the running backs, a position that produced 2008 Iowa Conference MVP Alex McGrew.

 

He also teaches at Senior and will enter his 31st season as the Head Girls Track and Field Coach in the spring. Murphy and his wife Christine are the proud parents of three children, Sean (26), Meghan (23), and Molly (19).
