Justin Heinzen is in his fourth season as the head women's basketball coach at Loras College. In three seasons at the helm of the Duhawks, Heinzen has compiled an overall record of 46-34, which includes three straight appearances in the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament.

 

Heinzen piloted Loras to a 13-14 overall record in 2009-10, which included a 7-9 record in conference play.Duhawks, who clinched the IIAC Tournament's sixth and final seed, became the first team in conference tournament history to win a game seeded at that position. Loras defeated third-seeded Wartburg College in the first round before falling in the semifinals to eventual tournament champion Simpson College, which later advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

 

Along with his team's tournament finish, Heinzen's squad finished in the top 25 in NCAA Division III in free-throw percentage (74.8/15th) and three-pointers made per game (6.9/24th). Loras landed three student-athletes on the IIAC All-Academic Team, two on the all-conference list and senior guard Lindsay Bava was named to both the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Region and D3hoops.com All-West Region teams for the second consecutive season. Heinzen, who moved into third at the school in both wins (46) and winning percentage (.575), has coached six players to all-conference honors through three seasons.

 

In Heinzen's first season at Loras, he led the Duhawks to the program's second-best season in terms winning percentage (.680) in 2007-08. After a program-best 10-0 start, which is also a record for most consecutive wins in a season, Loras wrapped up the 2007 calendar year with a 23-3 record, good for 7th best in NCAA Division III.   His teams, each of his first three seasons, have been ranked in the top 25 in free throw percentage and among national leaders in three point field goals made and three point field goal percentage. 

 

The 2008-2009 season was highlighted by a second place IIAC finish, a semi-final appearance in the conference tournament, a win over NCAA II Upper Iowa, and a team grade point average of 3.307. 

 

Prior to arriving at Loras, Heinzen spent two seasons (2005-07) serving as an assistant coach at Lakeland College (Wis.) under one of the NCAA Division III's all-time winningest coaches, April Arvan. In two seasons at Lakeland, the Muskies went 34-17 overall, capturing a Lake Michigan Conference regular season and tournament championship while making its fifth appearance in the NCAA Division III Tournament.

 

He began his coaching career at Manitowoc (Wis.) Lutheran High School and has held coaching positions at University of Wisconsin-Manitowoc, Reedsville (Wis.) School District and Higher Level Camps, one of Wisconsin's premier AAU organizations.

 

Heinzen graduated from Wisconsin Lutheran College in 2004 with a bachelor's degree in American history with a minor in political science. A 1999 graduate of Manitowoc Lutheran High School, Heinzen lettered in basketball, baseball and cross country for the Lancers.

 

Heinzen, a native of Manitowoc, Wis., was born October 21, 1980. Today he and his wife Kristina reside in Dubuque.

Lauren is in her second season with the Duhawks in 2009-2010. The Black River Falls, Wisconsin native recently earned her bachelor's degree from Clarke College in Athletic Training.

Her three-year Crusaders playing career included a team MVP award, an Academic All-Conference selection, and a lasting impression on the team record books. Johnson finished her career at Clarke in the top ten in scoring, steals, assists, three point field goals made, and free throw percentage.

Jennifer Randall, a native of Arthur, Illinois steps into the college coaching realm with her first assistant coaching position for the 2009-10 Loras College Duhawks. She will be Heinzen's first assistant.

 

Randall played her college basketball at NCAA Division III Elmhurst College in Elmhurst, Illinois before graduating with a degree in Biology/Secondary Education. She has spent the past four years as a teacher in the science department at Lovington High School while coaching the girl's varsity basketball team at nearby Arthur High School, her alma mater. Randall was the youngest basketball coach in the school's history and led them to their first 20-win season in 2006-07 in just her second season.

 

Randall mentioned her passion for the game of basketball and anticipation for the beginning of the Loras season earlier today.

 

"The move to the college game is one I've been anxious to make since leaving Elmhurst College in 2004," Randall said. "This position gives me the opportunity to pursue that dream and do it at a place with great facilities and a solid foundation for basketball set in place. Loras is a great fit for me and I'm excited about meeting the student-athletes, the rest of the Loras staff, and getting the season started."

 

Randall will be working primarily with the guards and contributing to the defensive schemes for the Duhawks.
 
 
Scott Schaber - Assistant Coach
 
Schaber is a native of Galena, Illinois has been coaching at the high school level at Galena High School with the Pirates' boy's team for the last two seasons and also spent time with River Ridge High School girl's team in Hanover, Illinois. He coached each of those teams to conference championships during his tenures at the two schools.

 

Schaber has a background in physical therapy and is a certified strength and conditioning specialist. He works full time as a physical therapist for Medical Associates at the Galena Clinic and now resides in Dubuque.  

 

His role with the Duhawks will be as an assistant with the varsity team and head coach of the junior varsity squad.

 

Schaber described his move to Loras as, "a very fortunate opportunity."

 

"I am immensely excited about being a Duhawk and I envision a very bright future for women's basketball here at Loras College," he added.
