Matt Jones - Head Coach - 8th Season

Matt begins his head coaching career in 2013-2014 after spending seven seasons as an assistant coach for the Loras College Duhawks.

 

Matt is a 2005 graduate of Loras.  He spent 3 seasons competing for the Duhawks Track & Field program.  In his 3 seasons as a Duhawk he received 2 All-American honors, (2003 Outdoor, 2004 Indoor) and was elected captain his senior year.

 

In his first 7 seasons as an Assistant with the Duhawks, Matt has 18 IIAC Champions, 14 National Qualifiers, 7 All-Americans, 4 Academic All-Americans and several school records have been rewritten.  2013 marked the 1st IIAC Conference MVP under Jones’ tenure and the first for the Duhawks since 2007.

 

Matt is a 2000 high school graduate of Davenport Assumption where ran cross country, track and played baseball for the Knights.  Jones currently resides in Dubuque, IA.

Bob Schultz - Associate Head Coach - 10th Season

EMAIL COACH SCHULTZ

 

Bob Schultz returned to Loras in 2005 to serve as the head men's and women's cross country and track and field coach. Schultz was previously an assistant at Loras from 1991-1994, and earned his master's degree in physical education from Loras in 1994. 

 

Schultz recently completed his ninth season as the Duhawks' cross country coach. The men's team won the IIAC Championship in 2012 for which Schultz was named the Iowa Conference Coach of the Year.  This fall Loras’ men won Pre-Nationals in Hanover, Indiana as well as running to a perfect score of 15 at their home Dr. Robert Tucker Invitational.  On the women’s side, Loras won the season opener at Central College and their home invitational.  Loras went on to finish as runner-up on both the men’s and women’s side at the Iowa Conference Championships, the top combined finish of any IIAC school.  Schultz was named Iowa Conference Coach of the Year for the women’s 2nd place finish.  The Duhawk men went on to qualify for the National Championship where they finished 26th in the country, while Loras’ top two women qualified to the Championships as individuals.    

 

Schultz served as Loras’ head track & field the previous nine seasons.  He has received a wide array of accomplishments during his time at Loras, including the IIAC and NCAA Central Region Coach of the Year in 2007 for men's indoor track and field. He led the men to the IIAC indoor championship in 2007 and the IIAC outdoor championship in 2005.  Schultz also led the women to a 5th place finish in 2007 at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Loras Track & Field had a combined 58 All Americans in men's and women's indoor and outdoor track and field at Loras, including three NCAA Division III Champions under Schultz.

 

Loras is Schultz's third different head coaching stop. He comes to Dubuque from Lewis University in the suburbs of Chicago. Schultz spent three years coaching at Lewis, where he coached the men’s and women’s cross country and track & field teams.  Combined between both teams, Schultz guided the Flyers to four Great Lakes Valley Conference titles in track and field and two in cross country.

 

Schultz has also previously served as the Head Coach at Elmhurst College, an NCAA Division III school in his hometown of Elmhurst, Illinois. He headed the cross country programs for eight years (1994-2001) and the track and field programs for six seasons.

 

Schultz graduated from Lewis University in 1991 after a successful career as an athlete. He ran in high school for nationally known York High School in Elmhurst, Ill. He, and his wife, Jennifer, are the proud parents of two sons, Joey and Justin. They reside in Dubuque.

Jesse Ernst - Assistant Coach - 3rd Season

 

Jesse Ernst is in his third season coaching the Duhawk high jumpers. Coach Ernst is a 2010 graduate of Loras College, graduating cum laude with degrees in Elementary Education and Spanish. Coach Ernst also holds a Master of Science in Educational Administration degree from Purdue University. During his first two seasons at Loras, he has coached a 3x IIAC Champion, 8 IIAC All-Conference place finishes and 3 NCAA Division III National Track and Field qualifiers in the High Jump. Two Duhawks established a new school record of 5’6.5” in the women’s high jump last spring.  Coach Ernst is also USATF level one certified. In addition to coaching at Loras College, Coach Ernst is a high school Spanish teacher and the Junior Varsity volleyball coach at Scales Mound High School in Scales Mound, Illinois.

Paul Wagner - Assistant Coach - 3rd Season

 

Paul Wagner is in his third season coaching the Duhawk pole vaulters.  Wagner was previously the Head Men's & Women's Track & Field Coach at Coe College for 18 years.  His teams won eight conference championships in his time with the Kohawks.  He has also coached 68 All-Americans, 4 National Championship finishes and 6 runner-up finishes.  In his first two seasons at Loras, Wagner has coached a 3 x IIAC Champion and had 7 pole vaulters earn All-Conference honors.  As an athlete, Wagner was a 7-time Conference Champion pole vaulter (4 indoor and 3 outdoor) and a 2-time NCAA National Qualifier as a student-athlete with the Kohawks, where he was also a football player, earning All-Midwest Conference and team MVP honors.

 

 
Sean Campbell - Assistant Coach - 1st Season

Sean Campbell begins his first season as the throwers coach for the Duhawks. He graduated from Loras College in 2012 with a degree in Physical Education. Sean threw four years at Loras where he was named field captain in 2011 and in 2012 he was the IIAC indoor weight champion.

 

Currently, Sean works as a substitute teacher within the Dubuque area.

 

 

 

 
Kyle Calvert - Assistant Coach - 1st Season

POLE VAULT

 

Kyle Calvert is a 2008 Loras College grad.  Calvert was a five time All-American for the Duhawks in the pole vault including a runner-up finish at the Outdoor National Championships his senior year.  He was a multiple time IIAC Champion and holds the Iowa Conference record for the indoor pole vault.  He also holds the Loras College record in the pole vault at 17’.75”.  Calvert is currently teaching at Loras in the Art and Digital Design program.

 
Dan McDermott - Assistant Coach - 1st Season

Dan McDermott is a 2012 Loras College grad.  He was a 4 year varsity letter winner in cross country and track.  McDermott was a two year team captain in cross country and a captain of the Loras track & field team his senior year.  In cross country McDermott was a multiple time All-Conference finisher including IIAC Runner-up his senior year.  He was also a multiple time All-Region finisher.  McDermott qualified individually to the cross country National Championships as a junior and then lead Loras’ team to the National Championships as a senior, where he finished 42nd in the Nation, narrowly missing All-American honors.  He was a multiple time All-IIAC Academic team member in cross country and track as well as a multiple time USTFCCCA All-Academic team member in cross country.  McDermott resides with his wife Katie in Dubuque.

Mid Distance

 

Katie Flogel-McDermott is a 2013 Loras College grad.  She was a 4 year varsity letter winner in cross country and track.  McDermott was also a captain for both the cross country & track teams.  Earned All-Conference in track in the Distance Medley Relay and the 3200 Meter Relay.  She was named a multiple time All-IIAC Academic team member in cross country and track.  McDermott resides with her husband Dan in Dubuque.
