The Loras College men's soccer team allowed just eleven goals against on their way to the Final Four a year ago. They went an eye-popping 17-0 in the Rock Bowl in 2012. Fifteen players scored multiple goals a year ago, with five other Duhawks netting one. Just two opponents were able to be score multiple goals on the Duhawks in a single game.
The team hasn't had a player score double digit goals over the course of a season since Miguel Bonilla's 10 in 2010. They haven't had two players reach double figures in goals scored in the same season since 2008. And yet they've posted 67, 65, 42, 75, and 68 goals over the last five years. That's 317 goals and just two players (Bonilla and Justin McCord) reaching double figures in any one season during that stretch.
The formula for success has been fine-tuned and tweaked in recent years – and head coach Dan Rothert expects more of the same in 2013.
"We're all very much aware of how close we were to winning the whole thing a year ago," Rothert noted this week, "and we have been rewarded with a nice preseason ranking as a result."
"But we can't reach our goals in the preseason and they don't give out trophies in September," said the 2012 IIAC Coach of the Year. "This is a new season, a new team, a strong team, and we'll go one game at a time like we always do. Usually that means getting everyone's best shot along the way, but it is a role we've learned how to handle and one we're not going to shy away from. I can promise you everyone we play will get our best effort as well."
The team's depth will once again be on display. Multiple players acknowledge the role of 'starter' doesn't carry as much weight as it might on other teams, because if you are in a jersey on game day, there's a good chance you'll get in and have a chance to contribute.
Returning All-Americans Kevin Cavers (2012 IIAC MVP) and Dan Figura headlines the team's core of returners. That duo will captain the team in 2013.
Also returning are first team All-IIAC goalkeeper Dylan Milkent, Erik Berkowitz, Johnny Rummelhart, and Tom Fluegel – each of whom made the All-IIAC cut in 2012.
A fresh crop of newcomers will complement the returners. Among those who have earned a varsity roster to start the season are Richard Lenke, Jimmy Ralph, Alex Bradley, and Kyler Olson.
"We have the leadership in the locker room to make another deep run in the tournament," added Rothert. "
