In 2012, Josh Goerdt traveled to California for nationals and was one spot off of the All-American podium with his ninth place finish in the 400 Meter Dash. This year, the trip was shorter and the reward sweeter.

Josh qualified with his school record 47.39 at Lacrosse a week earlier.

In his preliminary race on Friday evening, the third of three heats, Goerdt reached the finish line first to automatically qualify for the finals. He finished the heat in 48.00 seconds.

Goerdt set himself up for an All-American finish with his appearance in the finals, but needed to finish in the top eight to reach the podium. He responded on Saturday afternoon with another sub-48 time, this time 47.55. It was good enough for third place and a spot on the coveted All-American podium.

Goerdt will be a senior 2013-14. Four of the nine finalists on Saturday were seniors. The winner and runner up, both from Whittier, were a freshman and a junior.
