The Loras College baseball team is in their final week of Iowa Conference play and concluded their 4-game IIAC series with their neighbors at the University of Dubuque on Tuesday ahead of their final weekend series. Loras and Dubuque split the doubleheader, as they did two weeks ago, to finish 2-2 against the Spartans this year.
In Game 1, Loras drew four walks, were hit by three pitches, and managed five hits – but were ultimately kept off the scoreboard. The Duhawks left a troubling 12 runners on base, including some in scoring position in five of the seven innings of Game 1.
Mark Jablonski had two of the hits in the leadoff spot and 2-3 hitters Mike Pudlo and Mike Canevello each had one.
Will Petrosky started for Loras and threw four innings, allowing just three hits and conceding the only run of the game in the second inning after a single, sacrifice bunt, and another single.
Game 2 provided eight runs on offense for the Duhawks on their way to evening the series.
The Spartans pushed across one run in the bottom of the first, but the Duhawks answered quickly by doing the same with a Danny Fahlgren sacrifice fly in the top of the second. The Spartans were briefly in front again at 2-1 in the fourth inning when a leadoff double eventually scored on a wild pitch.
Then, the Duhawks uncovered the big inning they'd been hoping for.
Mike Canevello doubled home Mark Jablonski, who led off the inning with a single. With two outs, Loras used two walks, a hit by pitch, and a clutch Connor Reilly hit (down in the count 1-2) to plate three more runs. The 5-2 lead would hold up, with Loras scoring a single run in the seventh and two more in the eighth.
They'd end up needing those insurance runs to hold the lead as the host Spartans threatened to make things even more interested in the bottom of the ninth. Dubuque scored three times and the tying run came to the plate on two occasions before Jeremy Gerardy closed things out with his fifth save of 2013.
The mashup of teams from third to eighth place in the Iowa Conference standings are separated by just four games in the loss column. Loras sits in fourth at 10-12, with third place Buena Vista (12-12) coming to Petrakis Park this weekend. Mother Nature may play a role in the days and times, so stay tuned. Central plays Luther and Dubuque plays Simpson hosts Dubuque in the other action this weekend. Wartburg and Coe will finish their series on Sunday.
