Loras, 10

Dubuque, 7

With historical 'firsts' a significant part of the inaugural 2013 Loras College lacrosse season, the Duhawks hosted their first home game in the Rock Bowl and earned their first win in program history against their neighbors from the University of Dubuque. Both teams were seeking their first win of the season on Friday night. The Duhawks worked extremely hard to get their first win and defend their home turf, prevailing 10-7.

The Duhawks started the night off on the right foot with an unassisted goal by Kaitlyn Kutsch just two minutes into the game. It was her team high sixth goal of the inaugural season. Dubuque would erase one goal leads twice in the first eight minutes, tying the game at 2-2 until the Duhawks went on a four goal streak.  Two from Ellen Penticoff and two more from Kutsch gave them a promising cushion going into half at 6-3. Kutsch now has a team high nine goals this season.

As the supporters cheered loudly, the Duhawks refused to lose as Gina Dacy started the second half off by scoring her second goal of the game after just one minute. As the second half continued with the Duhawks maintaining their lead, Morgan Washburn scored back-to-back goals pushing the lead to 10-4.

With the six-goal lead, the Duhawks maintained their intensity down the stretch. Sam Schmidt was solid in goal with nine saves on the night for Loras, but the Spartans wouldn't go quietly. They ended the game scoring three goals in the final nine minutes, but that was not enough to overcome the deficit.

Gina Dacy and Morgan Washburn each scored their first goals as Duhawks in the win.

The win puts the Duhawks at 1-7 on the season. The first ever win will give the Duhawks a bit of momentum heading into Sundays game in the Rock Bowl against Concordia (Wisconsin) at 2:00 p.m.

The team welcomes your support and they were grateful to those who showed up for their first game in the Rock Bowl tonight.
