Kutsch scores Loras’ first goal in program history

Beloit, 23

Loras, 2

They haven't cracked the win column just yet, but the Duhawk lacrosse team has recorded their first two goals in program history, and they both belong to Dubuque native and freshman Kaitlyn Kutsch

Kutsch scored twice in the first 30 minutes – both times as a result of free position shots. After Erin Chambers of Beloit had helped the hosts with three of the first six goals, Kutsch scored just over seven minutes into the contest. She did the same with just over three minutes remaining in the first half.

The Buccaneers led throughout the match, but the Duhawks and head coach Emily Goetz are showing signs of improvement which aren't necessarily reflected in the box score.

"We have a ways to go," Goetz said after Wednesday's loss "but the girls are keeping great perspective and working hard to be where they want to be. These girls have kept their heads up and charge to the draw to go at it again and again."

The reality for the Duhawks and Goetz is that the startup program is a learning experience for many on the roster every day.

"We're picking up and learning an extremely large amount of skill and overall game play," Goetz notes.

"They are learning the game as we go while maintaining their focus on their stick skills. Many of them are still learning how to handle the stick with consistency."

Like anyone else who is 0-2 and working hard, Goetz remains focused on the progress her inaugural team can make.

"Practices this week will focus more on handling pressure, catching and throwing in transition, and defensive positioning," said the head coach.

"We will have bouts of high intensity short-sided games to increase our control and patience with the ball."

She's also happy with the demeanor of the squad.

"(The team) present themselves with class and character even with this adversity."

With Mother Nature refusing to cooperate, the Duhawks have once again been forced to push back their home opener. Saturday's (once upon a time Sunday's) Midland game has been wiped from the schedule. Next Saturday March 23, Loras hosts Robert Morris in a 2:00 pm start.
