Duhawks dominate in Platteville on Thursday

The Loras College wrestling team returned to the win column on Thursday night with a convincing 35-12 win over the Platteville Pioneers. The match included one forfeit and nine bouts. The Duhawks won eight of the nine contests. 

  

After a forfeit by the Duhawks at 125-pounds, things quickly turned in Loras' favor in Platteville. Two of the first three matches were Duhawk pins. Nick Steger and Greg Vance each earned first period falls. Sandwiched in the middle was a 141-pound decision by the Duhawks' Evan Weaver. Weaver started quickly and went on to win 7-2.

The Pioneers earned a pin of their own at 157-pounds to finish their scoring at 12 points. In the second period, Dan Colatari lost to Mike Uliana of Platteville.

 

Joe Butler won a high scoring decision at 165-pounds, sealing it with a late takedown in the third period.

 

Stephan Birt was quickly in front in his match at 174-pounds. He cruised to a 12-3 major decision victory. Connor Winel followed Birt's lead with another major decision, this time by the score of 11-1. Malcolm Watson also remained largely in control in his bout at 197-pounds, going on to win 8-2.

 

At heavyweight, James Buss disposed of another opponent by way of the pin. Cody Soderstrom's night lasted 1:37 before being pinned by the freshman.

 

Loras is back in the AWC for the Iowa Conference Dual Day match with Central. Loras is #5 and the Dutch #6 and the teams will battle for the fifth place slot in the final standings on Friday. The dual will begin at 7:00 PM.
