The Loras College men's basketball team was back in action Wednesday night visiting the Coe College Kohawks in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The Duhawks saw themselves in another close contest, yet unfortunately could not seem to hang with the Kohawks in the final minutes with Coe eventually winning 78-72.
A back-and-forth first half saw neither team lead by more than six points. The Duhawks got a big spark from Connor Mooney who came off the bench and scored a quick eight points while Jake Rutan and Ryan Coon held down the fort inside. Nathaniel Smith hit a running three pointer to close out the first half with the Duhawks down 36-33. Tough defense seemed to slow down the Duhawks as they shot just 38% from the field while Coe shot 50%.
Things didn't change in the second half. Both teams were going toe to toe in a very physical basketball game. However, Coe seemed to flex their muscles just a little bit more and gained a 10 point lead midway through the second half. The Duhawks continued to scratch, claw, and fight their way back to bring Loras within four points. That was as close as the Duhawks would get. Coe kept the game just out of reach by going 18-20 from the free throw line and eventually sealing the victory.
The Duhawks were led by Nathaniel Smith's 13 points followed by Ryan Coon's 11 and three other Duhawks finished with 10-including Jake Rutan who added 10 rebounds. The loss moves the Duhawks to 2-9 in conference play with three games remaining. Your Duhawks will be back in action on Saturday when Simpson (6-16, 2-9) visits the AWC at 4 pm for Senior Day and the "Think Pink Game."
