Dubuque, 78

Loras, 66

The Loras College men's basketball team slipped to 1-6 in league play on Wednesday night with a home loss to the Dubuque Spartans.

A back-and-forth first 20 minutes saw the teams tied or trade the lead 11 times, with neither team leading by more than seven points. Nathaniel Smith closed the first half with a runner at the buzzer to make it 30-28 Dubuque at the intermission.

The second half saw the Duhawks take a brief lead at 41-40 before Andrew Norris came off the bench to warm up the Spartan's offense. He scored 15 of his game high 21 points in the second half and scored six straight points after Loras took that lead.

The Duhawks were within striking distance for much of the second half, but Dubuque used 19-of-21 free throw shooting in the second half and Norris' efforts to push the lead to double digits over the last two minutes.

Individually, the Duhawks were led by Smith's 14 points on 6-of-12 shooting. Connor Mooney also knocked down six shots and finished with 13 points and four assists. Aaron Schueller knocked down a late three-pointer to reach double figures as well. Jake Rutan finished with nine points and eight rebounds. He also blocked three shots.

The Duhawks are in Waverly, Iowa on Saturday to take on the Wartburg Knights at 4:00 PM. They are 5-2 in the league and 10-7 overall.
