Duhawks turn up defense on Knights in AWC

The Loras College women's basketball team won for the fourteenth time this season, taking down the Wartburg Knights in the AWC. 


After Loras took an early 4-1 lead on the visitors, both teams went cold and combined for 10 turnovers during a scoreless six minutes stretch of the first half. The teams were tied at 11-11 with four minutes to go in the first half and the Duhawks closed it on an 8-1 run to lead 19-12 at the break.


Loras was 8-for-29 in the first half. Wartburg went just 4-for-19.


The Duhawks started the second half quickly, opening a 12-point lead in the first four minutes. The Knights didn't score over the final three minutes as the Duhawks limped to the finish line for a 12-point win. They were +18 on second chance points (20-2), +8 in turnovers (27-19), and +10 in the paint (18-8).


Katie Wheeler led the team with 13 points. Melissa Herrmann scored six points and pulled down 10 rebounds, including six on the offensive glass. Kaitlin Phillips left the game early in the first half with an injury and did not return.


The team hosts the University of Dubuque (13-4, 3-3) on Wednesday at 6:00 PM in the AWC. The game will air live on KCRG 9.2.
