The Loras College men's basketball team forced overtime with a late run in the AWC on Saturday, but came up short on a last-second three-point attempt in the extra session to fall to 5-9 overall. Alex Cline took both last-second shots from similar spots on the floor.
The Duhawks started fast, opening a 7-0 lead over the first three minutes. Coe claimed their first lead midway through the first half and the teams traded the lead six more times before the visitors closed the half on a 12-3 run.
The second half saw the Duhawks force Coe into a timeout with 13 minutes to play when they cut the Kohawks' lead to 42-39. Three and a half minutes later, Alex Cline's three point field goal put Loras in front 47-46. Coe held the lead the last six minutes and made two free throws with 10 seconds to play to go up 58-55. Alex Cline then took a Connor Mooney pass in the final three seconds and knocked down a 3-pointer to force OT. There was 1.9 second left in regulation when the Kohawks scrambled for a late attempt in regulation, but they were unable to take a true shot.
In overtime, Coe scored first, eventually opening a five point lead. Connor Mooney, Jake Rutan, and Aaron Schueller scored field goals during overtime, but they remained down by two points after the Kohawks missed a layup in the closing moments. Loras hustled down the floor to either tie or win the game, but Alex Cline's second 3-point attempt, this version to win the game, came in traffic from the right wing and was a touch off line, ending the game at 67-65.
Schueller finished with 13 points and Jake Rutan 10 for Loras. Nathaniel Smith had nine points and seven rebounds. Cline also finished with nine points.
The teams were nearly even in most categories, including points off turnovers, bench scoring, and second chance points. Loras outscored the Kohawks in the paint, 34-20.
