Loras, 27

#15 Central, 14

The Loras College AWC opened its second season as host to the Duhawk wrestling team's dual meets on Thursday night with an exciting upset of the #15-ranked Central Dutch. Loras took home victories in seven of the nine bouts that were wrestled – with one forfeit at 125-pounds.

Loras began the dual down 6-0 with a forfeit at 125-pounds but won the first two battles with the Dutch. Nick Steger – reigning Iowa Conference Male Athlete of the Week - continued his winning ways with a hard fought 6-4 decision at 133-pounds. Evan Weaver had a 4-0 lead in the first period of his match when he pinned TJ Peretti at the 2:03 mark.

The team score sat at 9-6 after three bouts.

The Dutch answered with a pair of wins of their own at 149- and 157-pounds over Loras' Greg Vance and Chris Lewis. Both were major decisions.

Loras then won the final five matches of the night, with four straight decisions from Joe Butler, Stephan Birt, Conor Winel, and Malcolm Watson. None were closer than Watson's overtime win over Theron Stewart. Each wrestler escaped to start the second and third periods, sending the match to overtime at 1-1. Each escaped again in the first set of alternating 30-second periods to make it 2-2. With riding time looming as the deciding factor in the final overtime session, Watson slipped his way into a reversal from his down position to claim a 4-2 win and give Loras a 21-14 lead heading into the heavyweight bout.

#4-ranked James Buss took care of that match, taking less than 30 seconds to earn a takedown and 2:50 to earn the pinfall over Jake Crawford.

The win puts Loras at 1-0 in the Iowa Conference and 5-8 overall ahead of this weekend's "Flash" Flanagan Open in the Graber Sports Center. The event will begin at 9:30 AM.
