Duhawks split Saturday duals at Knox

The Loras College wrestling team opened their 2013 portion of the schedule in Galesburg, Illinois at the Knox Duals on Saturday, splitting their four contests. 


Loras' wins came over host Knox and Trine. In the Knox dual, only a forfeit at 125-pounds put the Prairie Fire on the score sheet. Loras earned forfeit wins  in the last three classes at 184-, 197-, and 285-pound bouts.


In between, Nick Steger and Joe Butler earned pinfalls. Colin Griffin and Greg Vance earned tech fall wins. Chris Lewis and Stephan Birt also logged victories in the 48-6 win.


Against Trine, Loras claimed six wins of the nine bouts that were wrestled. Loras forfeited 125-pounds all day for six of Trine's 18 points. Nick Steger earned another pin, Greg Vance added one, and James Buss did the same at heavyweight. Griffin earned another tech fall at 141-pounds. Butler shutout his opponent 7-0. Mathias Palmershein also went 2-0 in Loras' two wins, earning a 6-5 win over his Trine opponent to go with his forfeit from the Knox match. The final team score finished 29-18.


In Loras' losses to Chicago (21-12) and Wabash (32-16), Buss and Steger continued their winning ways. Steger's third first period pin of the day came at 1:53 in the Wabash match and Buss won 8-2 in the Wabash dual. Steger won a low-scoring 4-1 decision in the Chicago dual and Buss pinned his man at the 4:32 mark against the Maroons.


Loras makes their 2012-13 AWC debut on Thursday night at 7:00 PM when the #14 Central College Dutch (7-1, 0-1) come to Dubuque. The Dutch lost to Coe 16-15 in their IIAC opener. This is Loras' first league dual of the season.
