The Loras College men's basketball team went 1-1 at the ‘Just A Game Fieldhouse' in the Wisconsin Dells over the weekend, netting an upset of #23-ranked UW-Stout on Saturday before falling in overtime on Sunday to UW-Oshkosh.
The Duhawks jumped out to an early 10-2 lead on the Blue Devils and the UW-Stout team took a timeout before making their way back to even at 12-12. Nathaniel Smith tied the game at 22-22 with a 3-pointer with 7:28 to play in the opening half. Loras would finish the first half strong with take a three point lead into the locker room.
Aaron Schueller, Connor Mooney, and Jake Rutan all knocked down shots early in the second half to extend Loras' lead to 49-41. The Duhawks held a slim lead for the middle portions of the second half until Stout charged back to tie the game at 67-67 with an Alex Oman 3-pointer with 2:22 to play. He led all scorers with 22 points, but those three would be the final ones for Stout on Saturday. The Blue Devils went 0-for-6 down the stretch while the Duhawks were getting a long distance shot from Mooney to go with his late free throws. Alex Cline and Smith also hit free throws in the final two minutes.
Mooney finished with a team high 14 points and Smith was right behind with 13. Every player recorded multiple rebounds with three players pulling down four apiece. Mooney added four assists and his understudy Bobby Harmening added 12 points and three assists.
Loras was back in action 24 hours later when they lost a heartbreaker to the Oshkosh Titans. Aaron Schueller went 5-for-11 from the field to lead Loras with 16 points but the Titans knocked down a late 3-pointer and an overtime free throw to prevail.
The teams traded jabs over the first 20 minutes and a late first half three pointer by the Titans tied the game at 29-29.
In the second half, Loras opened a 11 point lead with less than five minutes to play on a Schueller three, but Oshkosh outscored Loras 17-6 from that point on. The Titans forced overtime on a Cory Nickel three-pointer with just seconds to go. Loras' attempt at the other end was missed.
The Duhawks made four free throws in overtime and were tied at 72-72 with the ball in Oshkosh's hand for the final possession of OT. Loras was whistled for a foul and Jade Royston split his shots from the charity stripe to give Oshkosh the win.
The Duhawks open Iowa Conference play on Saturday in Decorah, when they take on Luther College (7-4) at 4:00 PM.
