Loras, 60

Carthage, 58

The Loras College women's basketball team improved to 7-1 on Saturday with an impressive road win over the #22 Carthage Lady Reds.

Loras used 19 offensive rebounds and a balanced scoring punch to take down a national quarterfinalist from last season.

The Duhawks led by as many at 11 points in the first half as they turned to Katie Langmeier for eight points and four rebounds in the opening 20 minutes. Three of her rebounds were on the offensive end and the junior from Cuba City, Wisconsin needed just 12 minutes on the floor to help Loras to a 28-19 lead at the break.

Katie Wheeler and Niki Rivera emerged as the best offensive threats in the second half, scoring 13 of the team's 32 second half point. The Duhawks pushed their lead to 14 points when Rachel Drees scored a layup and knocked down the free throw she was granted on the foul she took. Then, the lead was its largest with seven minutes to go at 16 points when Niki Rivera scored one of her two long distance shots.

Loras scored 22 second chance points (11 in each half) on their 19 offensive rebounds and totaled 30 in the paint. They also outscored the Lady Reds' bench 23-5. The Duhawks also forced Carthage into 19 turnovers.

As a result of their 7-1 start to 2012-13 and their road win over Carthage, the Duhawks appeared in the d3hoops.com poll this week as ‘receiving votes'. They are in the AWC this Sunday for a non-conference tilt against University of Chicago (1-6). Tipoff is 2:00 PM.
