Duhawks split back to back home meets against Simpson and Grinnell

The Men's and Women's Swimming teams hosted two meets this past weekend at San Jose Pool. On Friday night, the Duhawks took on their fellow Iowa Conference foe, the Simpson College Storm, all before hosting the Grinnell College Pioneers on Saturday.


Against Simpson, both the Loras Men and women cruised to victories. The men, who won 126-47, saw Kendal Hart win the 200 yard Freestyle (1:59.21), Zach Benson win the 100 yard Butterfly (56.92), and John Maevski set the school record in 1 meter diving with a score of 267.30.


For the women, Gabby Gaulke paved the way with her win in the 200 yard Freestyle (2:08.71), which was then followed by Heather Black's win in the 200 yard Individual Medley (2:27.90). Jill Gerken took home top honors in the 100 yard Backstroke winning with an eight second lead over second place.


On Saturday, the both squads suffered their first setbacks of 2012 with losses to Grinnell College. For the men, Matt Bogen put in an impressive performance, winning the 1000 yard Freestyle (10:35.45), 500 yard Freestyle (5:05.77), and helped carry the Duhawks to a victory in the 400 yard Freestyle Relay (3:27.75).


The women had victories from  Jill Gerken in the 50 yard Freestyle (27.70),  Heather Black in the 100 yard Freestyle (59.27), and took home the victory in the 400 yard Freestyle Relay (3:57.33).


Loras will compete in the Grinnell Invitational on November 30 and December 1 in Grinnell, Iowa.
