(at Illinois Wesleyan)

The Loras College men's basketball team opened their 2012-13 season at Illinois Wesleyan's event in Bloomington, Illinois on Friday and defeated Millikin by the score of 78-76.

Sophomore Nathaniel Smith led all scorers with 18 points on 8-for-13 shooting, including a three pointer and one free throw. Point guard Connor Mooney scored 17 points in his return from an injury that cut short his 2011-12 season.

Mooney went 7-for-8 from the free throw line, knocked down a three-pointer with two minutes to play, and added a late free throw to help Loras into the win column. Smith scored on back-to-back possessions with under two minutes remaining from close range to help extend Loras' late lead.

The Duhawks added eight blocked shots, were plus-5 on the glass (37-32) and nine different players scored.

The game included 12 lead changes, and Millikin made eight three-pointers to help them stay close throughout the night.

Loras is back in the Illinois Wesleyan gym for a 4:00 pm tipoff with the #8 Titans tomorrow. Fans can watch the game live here:
