UWP, 44

The Loras College women's basketball team opened the 2012 season in the AWC on Friday night and went into the win column with a 10-point victory.

The Duhawks were led in the scoring column by Brit Kent's 12 points on 6-for-10 shooting. She was one of five Duhawks with two steals on the night as well. Joining Kent in double figures were Katie Wheeler and Lauren Byrne with 10 each. Katie Langmeier threw in nine points and 10 rebounds and continued to do what Loras fans were used to seeing her do on the glass and in the paint.

Loras was solid in the paint in the first half, scoring 26 of their 35 points from close range.

The Pioneers led once early on, but the hosts were in charge the rest of the way, holding a lead in the 6- to 10-point range much of the night.

Loras is back in the AWC at 4:00 pm tomorrow to play Edgewood, who fell to Dubuque 74-51 in the first game of the Duhawks' tipoff event.
