Every college athlete remembers their final home game. Family and friends, teammates, and the home locker room are stamped in the minds of all student-athletes. If things go to plan, the final score is too. Unfortunately for the Duhawks, the annual tilt with neighbor University of Dubuque went to the visiting Spartans in a lopsided 45-0 contest in the 2012 "Key City Clash".
The visiting Spartans scored at least one touchdown in each quarter while the Duhawks played catch-up most of the afternoon. Loras remained within striking distance as late as the final minute of the second quarter, but a 17-yard touchdown pass by Dubuque with :51 to play in the first half put them in front 24-0. It was Wyatt Hanus' third touchdown toss of the first half.
Nate Carrier ran for 63 first half yards and Dylan Jones was 5-for-9, but Loras was just 1-for-7 on third down and had the ball for just 12 minutes in the first half.
The second half saw the Spartans put together scoring drives of 74, 62, and 62 yards on their way to the win column.
Loras had nine second half first downs but had drives stall or be shortened by penalty throughout the game.
Individually, Nate Carrier finished with 106 yards on the ground with a long run of 19 yards – and was brought down a few times by a ‘last defender' in secondary before heading to the goal line. Dylan Jones was 11-for-23 for 127 yards. Nate Even caught five of those passes. Mike Canevello logged 14 tackles and added an interception (pictured) in the second quarter.
The Duhawks will look to close out the 2012 campaign with a win in Waverly, Iowa next Saturday. The Wartburg Knights are 5-4, 3-3 in the Iowa Conference. Kickoff is 1:00 PM.
