Loras, Special Olympics Iowa will host ‘Play Day' in Graber Saturday

This Saturday the Loras College Department of Athletics and the Student Athlete Advisory Committee will host Special Olympics Iowa athletes for a "Play Day" at 9:30 AM. The event will include ten separate activities for the Olympians.

As part of the NCAA Division III's partnership with Special Olympics – which is in its second full year – Loras is hosting their second event this calendar year. In April, Special Olympics Iowa brought one of their Challenge Day events to the Athletics and Wellness Center.

"We are thrilled to have Kathy (Irving) and Special Olympics Iowa back on campus," Associate Director of Athletics Denise Udelhofen said earlier this week. "Our event last spring was successful, and everyone involved was committed to a strong event."

Irving, the Director of Athlete Initiatives at Special Olympics Iowa, echoed Udelhofen's sentiments on Wednesday.

"I can't say enough about the Loras students," Irving beamed. "I've talked about them since (the event in April). They've been the best group of people to work with and were truly, truly into what we were doing."

The ‘Challenge Day' in the spring included severe and profound and low-functioning participants. Saturday's event will be with higher functioning, younger athletes.

"The Olympians will compete individually on Saturday and have the chance to earn awards at each of the ten stations," Irving said. "We will have our usual opening ceremony, too."

There is also a promising future with the Duhawks and Special Olympics. Another Challenge Day is on the calendar for Irving and her group, and the AWC may turn out to be the destination for that event again.

According to Irving, there are also volunteer opportunities at the State Winter Games on January 14-16.

Saturday's events will include a balance beam, soccer kick, basketball, and bowling – among others.
