The Loras College men's basketball team started their 2009-10 season off on the right foot on Monday night with an 83-74 win over the Edgewood College Eagles in the Athletic and Wellness Center.
Five players scored in double figures for the Duhawks, two of those players came off the bench, none had more than 14 points, and the list included one freshman, one sophomore, two juniors, and one senior.
Junior Mike Gleason led Loras with 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting. Gleason was followed in the scoring column by three players with 11 points each - Travis Guy, Connor Mooney, and Alex Brant. Sophomore big man Dan Pawelski chipped in 10 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Jason Abbuhl, the highest scoring returner from last year's roster shot just 1-for-5 from the field but pulled down a team high eight rebounds (four offensive) and recorded the Duhawks' only block on the night.
The team posted 50 points in the first half, a welcome sight after losing a significant amount of their production to graduation. Loras shot 20-of-38 in the first half, compared to the Eagles' 11-for-28. The Eagles made just one three point field goal in eleven attempts and Loras won the rebounding battle, 41-34, both great signs in key categories - perimeter defense and aggressive action towards the missed shots on both ends of the floor. The Duhawks pulled down 17 offensive rebounds and turned them into 21 second chance points.
Head coach Greg Gorton's team also had 14 players see the floor and Loras won the battle in points from the bench, 36-14, a category they regularly lost a year ago, but will likely win more often than they lose in 2009-10.
The team will head to Minnesota to face Augsburg College on Friday in the Crown College Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament in St. Bonifacius. Tipoff on Friday is set for 5:30 PM.
The next game in the AWC and available over the airwaves (locally on Newstalk 1490 WDBQ and on the web at www.duhawks.com) is next Tuesday, when Loras hosts Wheaton College at 7:30 PM.
