#5 Wheaton, 5
The Loras College women's soccer team lost their first home game of 2012 on Tuesday night when the Wheaton Thunder put five goals into the host Duhawks' goal.
The game's first 10 minutes were even as each team traded runs into the other's half, but only one corner kick by the Duhawks showed up on the stat sheet. The Thunder took the first shift in momentum as the game reached the 15-minute mark.
The visitors used a stretch of about 15 minutes from the 18th minute to the 31st minute to take control on the scoreboard. Four different players – Sara Guidera, Alexa Sharkey, Leah DeMoss, and Ally Witt each beat the Duhawk defense. Two of the goals were shot from inside the 18-yard box, two from outside, and Wheaton was quickly in front 4-0.
Loras took their share of shots, but were unable to cut into the lead in the first half.
As the second half started, the visitors quickly extended their lead. Ally Witt picked up where she left off with a hard shot to the near post from just inside the 18-yard box just 45 seconds into the second half.
Loras' defense would settle in as the second half progressed, and the Thunder would be kept off the scoreboard for the final 44 minutes. The Duhawk offense improved over the final 45 minutes by forcing six saves from Hilary Barreto.
The hosts would break up the shutout in the 80th minute when Hillary Wilson forced Barreto into one of her saves on a free kick. Barreto's rebound came back to Wilson, who drove home Loras' goal, her fifth of 2012.
The Duhawks' five game winning streak was halted with Tuesday's loss, and the team fell to 7-4 with the loss. They'll continue their quest for an Iowa Conference title on Saturday in Decorah, Iowa in their first IIAC road contest of the year. They'll kick off with the Luther Norse at 5:00 PM.
