#17 Wartburg, 3
(25-13, 27-25, 25-20)
The Loras College volleyball team was on the road looking to pull off an upset of nationally ranked Wartburg in Waverly, Iowa on Wednesday night. Their efforts came up short, and the hosts showed why they were the preseason coaches' poll pick to win the league.
The Knights were in control throughout the first set, building a steady lead and finishing with a 25-13 win.
The second set was the closest, and required the hosts to sweat out a few extra points. Loras led by four points as late as 20-16. The hosts rattled off seven of the next nine points to get back in the set. The Knights had set point at 24-23 before an attack error from the Knights to tie things up. Then Kenzie Goedken gave Loras a lead at 25-24 with a kill. Wartburg would respond with three straight points – including two blocks and a kill – to take a 2-0 lead.
Loras opened another early lead in the third set before the Knights rallied back. The Duhawks led 10-6 and 17-14 at different points in the third and final frame. Wartburg scored 10 of the final 13 points of set three to claim the sweep.
For the Duhawks, Kara Grant was the best offensive threat, putting down 11 kills as the only Duhawk in double digits. Shawn Rielly added 27 assists and nine digs. Micaela Mertens had a team high 14 digs.
Wartburg out-blocked the Duhawks 6-1.
Loras fell to 4-7 with the loss, and have split their first two IIAC contests.
Loras is on the road this weekend at the Wheaton College for the Thunder's invitational. They'll play back-to-back contests on Friday beginning with the hosts at 4:00 pm. Saturday they'll take on former IIAC foe Cornell and neighbor University of Dubuque beginning at 10:00 am.
