The Loras College women's cross country team made their annual trip to the National Catholic Invitational at the University of Notre Dame on Friday and came away with a ninth place finish in the college division.

"I was very happy with the tremendous improvement that some of our returners had over last year for this same meet, especially those in our top five," head coach Bob Schultz said over the weekend. "They have earned the success they are having."

Coach Schultz continues to summer training of many on the roster, including the group who performed well on Friday.

Katie Flogel is among that group, and led the Duhawks to the finish line in 33rd place.

"I am excited to see how our team is working together during races," she says. "It is only the second meet and we are already pack-racing, and that is awesome."

Flogel was done with the course in 19:29.

"We all got out to a faster start and I think we all surprised ourselves in terms of how much more we are capable of."

Kellie Wagner and Maria Kalb weren't far behind Flogel  at all, coming in 40th and 47th place (19:36 and 19:50).

"All three of us have our own strengths that complement each other's races," Flogel says.

Loras' other two scoring slots came from Kayla Barnes and Bridget Hall. Barnes was 66th, Hall 73rd. The top five Duhawks were just 59 seconds apart.

Next up for the Duhawks is a Friday event in Rock Island, Illinois at the Augustana Invitational.
