RESULTS

The Loras College men's cross country team established themselves as the top Division III Catholic college on Friday evening with a 3rd place finish in the college division of Notre Dame's National Catholic Invitational.

Jerry Olp once again reached the finish line first for the #18 Duhawks. On the longer UND course, he needed 25:43 to earn a ninth place individual finish.

"We had high expectations coming into this meet because of our great results last year on this course," Olp said after the event. "We did not live up to these high expectations but we still got third against some pretty good schools."

Olp's expectations were matched by head coach Bob Schultz, but the Duhawks' leader admitted it was going to be tough to match last year's efforts at Notre Dame.

"It was going to be tough to top that (the 2011 results)," Schultz said. "We placed higher as a team than a year ago and had some good times, but when you have high standards, sometimes that is not good enough."

After Olp, Steve Loran and Rob Howe posted top-20 finishes. Loran was 16th in 26:12 and Howe was 19th in 26:18.

Ty Wittman and Austin Steil were 4-5 for the Duhawks in 26:27 and 26:39.

"It is still early so we have plenty of time to show others what we are made of," Olp noted.

The Duhawks are at Augustana College on Friday, September 21 for their next event.
