Duhawks start 2012 at Luther, finish 8th

Kellie Wagner, Katie Flogel, and Maria Kalb each finished in the top 50 at the season opening Luther College All-American meet on Saturday in Decorah, Iowa.

Wagner and Flogel were just seconds apart in 33rd and 35th place, respectively. Wagner finished the 5K race in 20:05 and Flogel reached the finish line just two seconds later. Kalb crossed the finish line at 20:17.

The next two Duhawks who finished the scoring for Loras were first-year runners Nora Gawlik and Kayla Barnes. Gawlik's first college time was 20:45 and Barnes' was 21:01.

Overall, head coach Bob Schultz was "very happy" with the times turned at the first event of 2012.

"Our returners all ran significantly faster than they did a year ago at this meet," Schultz added. "It was terrific seeing Wagner and Kalb up running with Katie Flogel."

Bridget Hall and Hallie Martin were sixth and seventh in the Loras lineup – in at 21:12 and 21:17.

Loras' top returner, Mary Rector, is expected back later this season as she recovers from injury. She ran a P.R. time the 2011 IIAC Championship in Decorah on her way to an All-Conference finish.

"It certainly hurts us not having her in the lineup, and you can see that reflected in the team results," Schultz said. "We're excited about her return to the lineup when she is ready."

Next up for the Duhawks is the annual trip to the National Catholic Championships at the University Of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana. This year's event is September 14 and will begin at 4:30 p.m. central time.
