Loras into second round, Bonilla into record book

The Loras College men's soccer team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championships on Saturday night following a convincing 3-1 win over the Webster University Gorloks.

The Duhawks didn't disappoint the home crowd on the opening night of action in the Rock Bowl, netting two first half goals and settling into a nice rhythm on both ends of the field. The scoring started in the 21st minute when Nate Minkel made an extra pass inside the Gorlok's penalty box to find an open Miguel Bonilla for his 18th goal of the season.

When Bonilla knocked home the game's opening goal over sprawling Webster goalkeeper Matt Geringer, he tied his 2008 mark of 18 goals in a single season, the second best in Loras history, and also tied the six-year-old record for goals in a career by Brad Johnson (44). Bonilla netted eight goals as a freshman and 18 apiece in his last two seasons. During last weekend's Iowa Conference tournament, he became the first player in Loras history to eclipse the 100 points mark in a career, posting two goals and one assist in the semifinals and finals. His 18th goal of his junior season on Saturday put him at 104, five more than Brad Johnson. His next goal will be his 45th and push him past Johnson, who now coaches the men's team at the University of Dubuque.

Once Bonilla had set the tone with Loras' first goal even before Webster had managed a shot, the Duhawks continued to attack Geringer, sensing a chance to apply pressure on the scoreboard. Twelve minutes later, senior defender Matt Splittgerber finished off a free kick started by Santiago Mejia and continued by Tom Jennings along the end line to make it 2-0. The teams headed to the Graber Center for halftime with the score at 2-0 in favor of the hosts. In the 54th minute, Tom Strumpf extended Loras' lead with a long-distance crack from in front of the Duhawks bench and into the side netting at the far post to make it 3-0.

The Gorloks would break up the shutout in the 67th minute when Michael Riti's shot deflected off of a Duhawk defender and past junior goalkeeper Dan Wickman. Some additional pressure late by the Gorloks led to a couple more opportunities, but nothing that required a save from Wickman.

Loras advances to play Macalester on Sunday night in the Rock Bowl at 6:00 PM. The Scots defeated Grinnell 2-0 on a two-goal effort by Carson Gorecki. During the regular season back on September 13th, now over two months ago, the Duhawks defeated Macalester 4-0 in the Rock Bowl on Day 2 of the Loras/UWP Invitational.
