Previewing: Loras College Women's Cross Country
Thu, Aug. 30, 2012 - [Women's Cross Country]

The 2012 Loras College women's cross country team will look to build on their third place finish (78 points) at the Iowa Conference Championship and top ten finish at the NCAA Division III Central Region Championships. They'll do so under head coach Bob Schultz and a core of returners who were a part of both postseason finishes in 2011.

"Our women seem fit as they return to school off of their summer training," Coach Schultz said this week.

Schultz is looking at the largest roster during his tenure - and - one with five returners from the 2011 team. In other words, a core is in place, and a depth is present, that, Schultz says, "will be a tremendous strength of our team."

That course-tested core includes Mary RectorMaria Kalb, Katie Flogel, Kellie Wagner, and Bridget Hall. According to Schultz, these returners "had great summers and it has shown so far in early season practices."

Among the fresh faces who might be able to help the team achieve their goals are Nora Gawlik, Kayla Barnes, and Amanda Runde.

"Our main focus is on placing well at the Iowa Conference meet," Schultz said earlier this week. "With two top 25 teams in our conference, a top three finish for us would be terrific."

Beyond that, the team is seeking an improved finish at regionals that might include a nationals berth. A top five finish in the central region would be required to qualify automatically.
