The Loras College women's tennis team has the honor of kicking off the 2012-13 seasons when they travel to Beloit College on Thursday afternoon for a non-conference dual with the Buccaneers.
For head coach Karl Stubben, the season will be about continued growth, the opportunity for on-court leaders to emerge, and hopefully a few more wins.
"We lost a four year starter in Alejandra Ruales, but I believe we can still improve on the 2011 season," Stubben said this week.
"The returners are setting a terrific example for the newcomers – who make up half of our squad. Intensity was high throughout the preseason and I'm hoping the conditioning will provide us with a good start to the fall season," Stubben added.
As far as the 2012 schedule goes, Stubben and his team are eyeing the league contests where they can potentially nab some wins, including some on the road.
Est Mungai returns with the most wins from the 2011 squad with six singles wins. She paired with Caroline Rainey for a pair of doubles wins as well. Sarah Alt, along with Rachel and Rebecca Weglarz also help make up what Coach Stubben calls his "core lineup that has been working together for two solid years now".
The fresh faces on the roster will also have their chances, according to Stubben.
"They will all have an opportunity to carve their own niche in the lineup with enough effort and development," says the eighth year head coach.
"Everyone appears to be much improved."
