Loras College senior Dan McDermott - the student body President in 2011-12 - was named to the Capital One Academic All-District First Team shortly after the conclusion of the NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships. The team, comprised of track and field and cross country runners from District 8, is made up of 13 student-athletes from the western portions of the country.

McDermott earned his degree from Loras as a Management and Finance double-major this spring after a career that included noteworthy performances both on the cross country course and the track.

During his final cross country season, McDermott led the Duhawks to a top-25 finish at the NCAA Division III Championships and the team's first Iowa Conference cross country championship since 1997.

He ran Loras' fastest 5K time this spring and second fastest time in the other distance events during the indoor and outdoor seasons.

McDermott was also one of the first to complete Loras' Breitbach Catholic Thinkers and Leaders program. He was one of two IIAC student-athletes to make the CoSida men's track and field and cross country list this year.
