Sun, Nov. 15, 2009 - [Cross Country]
The Loras College men's and women's cross country teams posted identical 14th place finished in Grinnell, Iowa on Saturday at the NCAA Division III Regional Championships. Tara Kilburg and Dan McDermott were the first Duhawks to cross the finish line in their respective races.
In the women's race, Loras earned a 14th place finish (361) by placing three runners in the top 65 places. Junior Tara Kilburg was two seconds faster than teammate Erica Stevens on Saturday, finishing the course in 23:34 and 23:36, respectively. Absent from the top two for the first time this season was senior Hannah Weiss, who came down with the flu this week and was unavailable to run for head coach Bob Schultz's women's team. After the senior Stevens and Kilburg, Loras had scoring runs from freshmen Ashley Schoenoff (a sub-24-minute 23:54), junior Meghan Wollett (24:21), sophomore Genna Kinley (24:43), and junior Erinn Sanstead (24:49). The other freshmen in the lineup, Maria Kalb, battled an asthma attack and did not finish the race.
In the men's race, the Duhawks were led by Dan McDermott, who came on strong at the end of his sophomre season for Schultz's team. McDermott finished 18th at the Iowa Conference Championships, second to the line for Loras on Halloween, and was the top finisher for Loras in 64th place on Saturday. His time of 26:48 was three seconds faster than Tyler Meyer's 68th place finish. Juniors Mike Higgins and Dain Leytem each reached the finish line before the 27:00 mark. Loras' final three finishers were Ryan Engelman (27:32), Tom Henders (27:50), and Austin Steil (28:00). The times/placements were some of the best posted this season by the Duhawks.
Unfortunately for a total of five Duhawks, it marks the end not only of the season, but the careers. Congratulations to those seniors who logged many miles both in training and during competition in their four years in the purple and gold.
