The Loras College men's track and field team finished in third place at this year's Iowa Conference Championships hosted by the University of Dubuque on Saturday following a trio of individual championships and ten All-IIAC performances. Loras' 116 points was 22 points more than in 2011, when the Duhawks finished in fourth.
Headlining Loras' efforts on the weekend was Josh Goerdt's record-setting performance in the 400 Meter Dash. Goerdt won the event by 0.33 seconds in 47.83 seconds. He became Loras' first 400 runner to run a sub-48 second time in setting the Duhawks' nine year old record. The time is also among the best in the country – currently at #8 in NCAA Division III.
The most dramatic win of the weekend for the Duhawks came in the 3,000 Meter Steeplechase. Austin Steil won the event in 9:38.94. After holding a late lead, Steil was passed, only to return to the lead in the final 100 meters following a stumble on the final barrier of the race by a competitor. Steil kicked his way to a win of almost two seconds after clearing the last hurdle cleanly. The time was a season best for Austin.
Loras' third win of the weekend came in the Javelin Throw. Freshman Michael Meersman's third throw of 183'-11" was more than 10 feet further than his previous best in 2012 and more than seven feet ahead of the second place toss.
A pair of Duhawks finished third in the distance events (all runner up and third place efforts earn All-IIAC status). Rob Howe was third in the 5,000 Meter Run with a 15:25.25, a split second from second place. In the 10,000 Meter Run, Jerry Olp was also third, making the All-Conference cut in 31:48.
Also on the track, the 4x100 team of Kyle Ward, Goerdt, Zac Gassman, and Payne Finn finished in third place.
Sam Ross earned a pair of All-IIAC spots in the throws. He was third in the Shot Put (49'-0.25") and second in the Discus Throw (144'-10"). Joining Ross on the All-IIAC discus list was sophomore Ryan Piche, (143'-9"). In the Hammer Throw, Sean Campbell was second with a 175'-4" effort.
The Duhawks will be available for ‘Last Chance' qualifying meets at UW-LaCrosse, Augustana, and North Central ahead of the NCAA Division III Championships on Memorial Day weekend.
