2009 finale ends with Luther GW field goal in closing moments

Duhawks close out 2009 at 2-8, 2-6 in IIAC

The 2009 Loras College football season came to a heartbreaking close on Saturday with a 20-17 road loss to Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. The Duhawks climbed all the way back from a 17-0 deficit in the second half to tie the game at 17-17 before the Norse converted the game-winning field goal with five seconds left on the clock.

A slow first half in terms of points included two trips to the red zone for Loras, but no points. Seth Streeter kicked a field goal for the Norse halfway through the second quarter for the only points in the first half. Loras had the ball for over 11 minutes of the first quarter, the Norse controlled the second quarter with over 11 minutes of possession. Taylor Buhmeyer missed his field goal attempt from 36 yards out on Loras' first drive.

The third quarter proved to be the highest scoring frame, with a combined 21 points between the teams. Luther's 3-0 lead was up to 10-0 after the opening drive of the second half went 49 yards on seven plays, ending with a Tyler Bass five yard run. Halfway through the third quarter Juan Gonzalez had his punt blocked and returned 12 yards by Bruce Clarke to make it 17-0.

Loras finally posted points late in the third quarter when an 11 play, 60 yard drive finished in the Luther end zone. Johnny Jackson ran for two first downs and Chris Swift caught a 3rd-and-18 pass for 24 yards to keep the Duhawks drive going. Three plays later Jackson had his second touchdown of the season and Loras was within two scores.

Loras safety Joe Gruben intercepted Luther quarterback Chris Reynolds in the fourth quarter to set up the final field goal of senior Taylor Buhmeyer's career and cut the home team's lead to 17-10. A quick three-and-out by Loras' defense (including a fumble by Luther which the Norse ended up falling on on second down) gave Vaughn Gesing and the Loras offense a chance to tie with decent field position and 4:25 on the clock.

Another 25-yard strike to Chris Swift and a pass interference penalty had Loras marching into the red zone again, and on a 3rd-and-10 play from the 15 yard line, the Gesing found Swift for the game-tying touchdown.

Luther responded by following Chris Reynolds' lead down the field (37 yards rushing, 29 yards passing), capping an 8 play drive with a 22-yard field goal by Seth Streeter with five seconds remaining on the clock. The field goal would stand, as Loras was able to run just one desperation play from their own 36 yard line that fell incomplete.

Chris Swift went over 100 yards (118) on his six catches in his final game in a Loras uniform. Johnny Jackson ran for 61 yards and a score. Vaughn Gesing was 15-of-34 with one touchdown and an interception to wrap up his sophomore season. He was also sacked seven times.

Loras ended their season 2-6 in the Iowa Conference and 2-8 overall - going 1-4 at home and 1-4 on the road in 2009. 15 seniors played in their final game in a Duhawk uniform on Saturday.
