After this weekend's action, third through seventh place in the Iowa Conference softball race are separated by just two losses. The Duhawks now have seven losses, and have their final four Iowa Conference games of 2012 firmly under the microscope. The Cornell Rams took down the Duhawks twice on Saturday. Loras closes 2012 with Dubuque and Central.
Game 1: Cornell 10, Loras 0 (5 Innings)
Seven of the Rams' ten runs came in a sloppy bottom of the second inning. The hosts used five hits and two Loras errors to open an eight run lead. The Duhawks were able to produce one hit, a double by Shelby Perkins, in their five innings of offsense.
In the fourth inning, Cornell would add a couple of runs with the help of two more errors to ensure the game ended early.
Six of the ten runs the Rams scored were earned – three against each Loras pitcher. Kellie Klein relieved Lara Mangialardi after 1+ innings of work.
Game 2: Cornell 1, Loras 0 (8 Innings)
After having Game 1 shortened with the run rule, Game 2 was a pitcher's duel. Amanda Engel and Stephanie Popovich combined to strike out nine and allow just four hits through seven innings. The teams played to a scoreless tie over the first seven innings.
The Rams didn't have a runner reach second base in that stretch.
The Duhawks threatened in the fifth and sixth innings with a runner in scoring position, but both threats ended with fly out-strike outs to the next two batters. They were again held to just one hit.
Loras went down in order in the top of the eighth inning and Brittani Yost homered in the first at bat of the bottom half to give the Rams a walk-off win.
Popovich struck out three and didn't walk a batter in the loss.
The Duhawks host their StriKeout Cancer games on April 24 when University of Dubuque comes to town.
