#5 Loras beats #4 Cornell, lose to #1 Simpson in final weekend of 2009

IIAC Tournament RESULTS HERE

The Loras volleyball team beat Cornell, 3-1 (25-19, 25-15, 19-25, 25-20) in the opening round of the IIAC Tournament hosted by Simpson College. The Duhawks had just suffered a 3-0 defeat to the Rams on October 27th but were able to turn the tables on Cornell on Friday afternoon. Brittney Westermeyer led a balanced Duhawk attack with 16 kills on the night. Julianne Lord and Regan Riley chipped in with 11 kills apiece and Danielle Lewis added another 10 as Loras advanced. Julie Rogers had 45 assists on the night, and Michelle Bahl finished with 42 digs. 
               
Unfortunately, the Duhawks season would come to an end later in the night as they faced IIAC regular season champion and host Simpson College. The Storm took a second set which required 26 points to win and jumped out to a 2-0 match lead and ended up winning the match 3-1 (25-21, 26-24, 20-25, 25-21). Brittney Westermeyer had 13 kills, Julianne Lord added 12, and Danielle Lewis tallied 11 kills for the match. Julie Rogers added 42 assists and Michelle Bahl registered 17 digs in her final collegiate match. Loras finished the season with a 14-21 overall record.
               
The Iowa Conference All-Conference Teams were released at the conclusion of the tournament and two Duhawks received honors. Freshman Brittney Westermeyer was named first team All Iowa Conference middle blocker. Sophomore Julianne Lord was named second team All Iowa Conference outside hitter.
