The Loras College softball team swept their home doubleheader from the Wartburg College Knights on Tuesday afternoon, winning Game 1 by the score of 5-2 and Game 2 by a 7-4 margin. Alaina Rigdon had two hits in each game to pace the offense, in addition to the three Duhawks who had two-hit games in Game 2.

Game 1: Loras 5, Wartburg 2

The Duhawks fell behind in Game 1 to Wartburg after the visitors put together two 2-out hits in the opening inning. It took Loras until the fourth inning for the Duhawks to respond and take the lead.

The hosts scored four runs on five hits in the bottom of the fourth, including a RBI singles from Kellie Klein and Cassandra Maniatis, and RBI double from Katie Serpico, and an RBI triple from Regan Thies.

The Knights would add another single run in the top of the sixth against starter Stephanie Popovich before she was lifted for Holly Klein. Klein closed things out for her first college save. She would then leadoff the Loras half of the sixth with a hit and score an insurance run for the Duhawks. Popovich struck out five batters in her five innings of work on the mound.

Thies was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate for Loras.

Game 2: Loras 7, Wartburg 4

Lara Mangialardi was the pitcher of record in Game 2, earning her second win of 2012 after allowing just one earned run (four total) over 6.1 innings. She struck out five as the Duhawks built an early lead on the Wartburg team.

The Knights took another early lead, going up 1-0 in the second inning before the Duhawks answered in the bottom half with two runs to take the lead for good. Leanne Szela helped the offense get going with an RBI single, stolen base, and run in the inning.

The bottom of the third saw the Knights go to the bullpen and the Duhawks jump on Tori Herzberg to the tune of five runs on five hits. The Duhawks were in control until the top of the seventh when the Knights threatened to catch the hosts after an error early in the inning. Lynn Heitkamp drove home two runs with a double and Loras went to Holly Klein again out of the bullpen.

Klein faced the minimum two batters, getting a groundout and a strikeout to complete the sweep.

Loras will be home on Saturday for Senior Day against Coe College. The doubleheader will begin at 2:00 PM on Faber-Clark Field. Between games, the Duhawks will recognize the careers of Leanne Szela, Cassandra Maniatis, and Katelyn Jones.
