The 2012 Iowa Conference baseball season started for the Loras College Duhawks on the road in Indianola, Iowa this weekend with a three-game series with the Simpson College Storm. The doubleheader remained on Saturday afternoon, and the single game was moved to Sunday. At the conclusion of the weekend, the hosts were atop the IIAC at 3-0 and the Duhawks find themselves at 0-3.

Game 1 – SIM 3, LOR 2

The Duhawks weekend started with their fourth 1-run loss of the last 10 days. Loras trailed 2-0 after three innings on single runs in the bottom of the first and bottom of the third against starter Ben Cottrell.

The Duhawks used a big sixth inning to tie the game. With the bases loaded following a leadoff single, fielder's choice, and hit by pitch, Clay Henricksen put a ball in play that set into motion an error by the Storm's first baseman - sending home Mike Pudlo and Joe Walker and tying the game at 2-2.

There was only one other hit, again by Mike Pudlo, by either team over the next two innings leading to the bottom of the seventh. He finished 3-for-3 on the day.

In that final half inning, the Storm leadoff hitter singled and after a fly out to center and a groundout to the first baseman, was in scoring position. The only extra base hit of the game, off of reliever Donny Baran, led to the walk-off win for the Storm to start the series.

Game 2 - SIM 4, LOR 1

The second game of Saturday's doubleheader was another low-scoring affair.

Loras plated their run in the top of the fourth inning when Clay Henricksen doubled and reached home on a failed pickoff attempt/error by the catcher. The 1-0 lead held up until he 4-run sixth by the Storm.

Duhawk starter Will Petrosky allowed just three hits in the first five innings and one to start the sixth. The leadoff double in the bottom of the sixth inning was at third base after a groundout and was in to tie the game shortly after. Spencer Radabaugh entered with one out in the sixth and his throwing error scored the tying run for Simpson. Loras managed another out but the hosts used a fielder's choice, wild pitch, and two more hits to open up a 4-1 lead.

The Duhawks went relatively quietly in the top of the seventh, and Simpson finished Saturday at 2-0. Henricksen, Pudlo, and Travis Olson logged Loras' three hits on the day.

Game 3 – SIM 5, LOR 1

The teams returned to McBride field for the series finale on Sunday and Loras posted their series-best seven hits in the nine inning contest, but again walked away with just one run scored. It came in the top of the seventh inning via a Clay Henricksen RBI single, scoring pinch runner Kevin Harlander who was on for pinch hitter Connor Reilly after he drew a walk. The run made it 4-1.

Simpson scored two runs in the third inning and two more in the fifth off of starter Adam Schwoebel to build their lead. Tyler Craig hit a two-run homer in the third and the Storm put together four hits in the fifth with the heart of their order to double their lead.

They would add another single run in the eighth and finish in front, 5-1, to sweep the series.

Loras dropped to 8-8 overall and 0-3 to start the IIAC schedule ahead of next weekend's series. The Duhawks will host Central (12-3, 3-0) in their home opener, beginning with a single game on Friday evening at 6:00 PM. Saturday's doubleheader will begin at 1:00 PM.
