UWP 4, LOR 3

The Loras College baseball team took their third 1-run loss of the season on Tuesday in Platteville, Wisconsin to the Pioneers. The hosts plated three runs in the sixth inning to prevail, 4-3.

A two-out rally in the third inning by the Duhawks led to the first run of the game against the Pioneers' starter Adam Theis. The first three hitters in the order provided singles for three of the team's five hits on the day. Leadoff man Mike Canevello came around to score on Billy Kass' hit to left field.

A leadoff double by the Pioneers in the fourth inning would come around to score and tie the game at 1-1. The sixth inning would prove to be the difference.

The Duhawks claimed a 2-1 lead in the top half of the inning after a first-and-third scenario worked in the Duhawks' favor. Travis Olson walked and was in scoring position quickly before moving up to third on a fly ball to right field. Joe Walker's speed and Olson's heads up running resulted in the Duhawks' second run.

In the bottom half of the inning, Platteville did the difference-making damage. They were credited with four hits, including two against starter Austin Safranski and two against reliever Jeremy Gerardy. Topher Scheeler's double was the final hit of the inning and forced in the game's two decisive runs.

Loras responded with one run in the top of the seventh from the top of the order again, but the ninth inning rally fell short and the Pioneers moved into the win column for the second time in 2012.

Safranski went 5.1 innings and allowed two earned runs on five hits and struck out four. He didn't walk a Pioneer or throw a wild pitch in his no-decision. Gerardy took the loss.

Loras now prepares for the Iowa Conference schedule which begins with a weekend road trip to Indianola, Iowa for a three-game series with the Simpson Storm (6-8).
