Loras wins first competition inside AWC, 33-10 over UWP

The Duhawks ventured into the Athletics and Wellness Center for the first time in program history on Thursday night and took care of business to the tune of a 33-10 win over the University of Wisconsin-Platteville Pioneers. The Duhawks won seven matches, including one forfeit, on their way to the 23-point victory.

 

The forfeit came right away at 125 pounds and gave Pat Pfantz his 25thwin of the season.

 

The most closely contested match of the night was next. Matt Holmes and TJ Wunnicke battled throughout their 7-minute test. Wunnicke prevailed 5-4. Tyler Henken's riding time gave the Pioneers their lone bonus point of the night in the next match with an 11-3 major decision over Chris Reed at 141 pounds.

 

The Duhawks responded with six straight wins from 149 pounds through 197 pounds. Trailing 7-6 on the scoreboard, Joe Wood controlled his 15-5 major win at 149-pounds. Chris Gansen locked horns with Rob Maertz in a closely contested bout until the closing moments, when Gansen rattled off a series of points, including a near fall as the final buzzer sounded. He won 5-0.

 

Mitch Gansen ushered in the first pin AWC history with a late charge against Shawn Flom. It took 6:10 to record the fall, but Gansen gave the Duhawks a 19-7 lead with the win.

 

Joe Butler and Josh Kirkland controlled their matches to both win major decisions.

 

Loras' fastest win of the night came at 197 pounds where Ryan Ward took just over two minutes to pin Mike Harman.

 

Kyle Henry scored two early points in his match at heavyweight, but UWP's Devin Johnson made a late push to claim a 3-2 victory.

 

When it was all said and done, Loras walked away with a 33-10 win – their fifth dual win of the season. Next up, the Duhawks will host University of Dubuque for Senior Night on February 14that 7:00 PM. That dual will also be held in the AWC.
