Holmes and Wood log wins in Waverly

After four bouts on Wednesday night in Waverly, Iowa the Duhawks held a slim 10-9 lead over #1 Wartburg College. The hosts then rattled off six straight wins to earn the IIAC win over the Duhawks, 37-10.


After Pat Pfantz lost his opening 125-pound match to the #2 ranked Wartburg wrester by technical fall, Matt Holmes answered for the Duhawks with a late pin over Jake Agnitsch (6:30) at 133 pounds. Chris Reed lost a major decision at 141 pounds before Joe Wood won a major decision of his own, 11-1, at 149 pounds. Wood's win put the Duhawks back in front at 10-9.


Four of the final six Knights wrestlers appear in the national rankings at their weight class and helped push Wartburg into the win column. The hosts logged two decisions, two technical falls, and two pins over the Duhawks. Josh Kirkland lost a slim 2-1 decision at 184 pounds and Mitch Gansen hung around with #2-ranked Landon Williams at 165 pounds.


The Duhawks fell to 4-18 overall and 2-4 in the Iowa Conference with the loss.


They will host two more duals ahead of the 2012 Iowa Conference Championships in Cedar Rapids on February 24.


Loras will compete in the AWC Thursday night at 7:00 PM against UW-Platteville and close the regular season on February 14thagainst University of Dubuque.
