Duhawks will wrestle for the first time in AWC
Tue, Feb. 7, 2012 - [Wrestling]

For the first time since the facility has opened, the Duhawk wrestling team will compete in the Athletics and Wellness Center this month. Loras will compete in the venue twice over the next two weeks.

Loras College will host the University of Wisconsin-Platteville Pioneers on Thursday, February 9 and the University of Dubuque Spartans on Tuesday, February 14. Both duals will begin at 7:00 PM.

"I think with the setup, the fan base on campus, the local opponents, and our alumni support we'll have a great turnout and two fun events," head coach Randy Steward said Monday.

"As so many people are already aware – the facility is great. Our team is looking forward to it!"

Loras annually hosts anywhere from 5-10 events each season. They include the season opening Loras Open at Five Flags, the "Flash" Flanagan Open and Duhawk Open in Graber Sports Center, and a handful of dual meets – also traditionally held in the Graber Sports Center.

"We are thrilled that our wrestling team and our wrestling community can experience this premier facility," Director of Athletics Bob Quinn added.

"Many Duhawks have supported this facility, including several from within our wrestling community. I believe this is a great opportunity to showcase the facility to a loyal fan base and we're looking forward to more events in the future."

The Duhawks will wrestle Wednesday night in Waverly, Iowa against Wartburg College (18-1, 7-0). They'll turn around and take on UW-Platteville (7-10) on Thursday. The regular season concludes against the Spartans (3-5, 2-3) next Tuesday. On February 24, the Duhawks will look to punch some individual tickets to the NCAA III Championships and capture IIAC titles at the 2012 Iowa Conference Championships at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
