Pawelski Senior Day double-double not enough for Duhawks
Mon, Feb. 6, 2012 - [Men's Basketball]

Dubuque 68, Loras 63

The Loras College men's basketball team fell to 5-17, 2-11 with a 68-63 loss to the Dubuque Spartans on Saturday evening. The visitors used 9-of-20 timely long distance shooting to knock off the Duhawks, who cut the visitors double-digit second half lead down to two points with about 20 seconds left.

The Spartans sharp-shooting started early with a 4-for-4 start from the field – all 3-pointers – and opened a 12-2 lead. A Zack Peterson layup with five minutes to go in the first half had the Dubuque lead to 25-23, and the visitors pushed to halftime with a late first half surge to take a 34-27 lead into the locker room.

The Duhawks fell behind by as many as 18 points in the second half before putting together a comeback in front of the biggest AWC crowd of the season on Senior/Alumni Day.

Seniors Dan Pawelski and Brian Gaughan each made multiple field goals over the final four minutes to cut the Dubuque lead to 65-63 with less than 20 seconds to play. The Spartans made 3-of-4 free throws down the stretch to open their late lead and the Duhawks' final two 3-point attempts missed the mark as they tried to complete the comeback.

Pawelski finished with 18 points and 14 rebounds. Gaughan went 5-for-8 from the field and finished with 15 points.

The teams were nearly identical from the field (Loras 23-of-60, Dubuque 23-of-61) and free throw line (Duhawks made 12 free throws, Spartans 13), but the visitors went 9-for-20 from long distance to Loras' 5-for-19.

Each of the Duhawks' five seniors started the game following their pregame introductions. Pawelski, Gaughan, Tim Kelly, Jordan Harrelson, and Zack Peterson combined to score 43 of the Duhawks' 63 points on Saturday.

Loras also welcomed back two dozen alumni for a game on Saturday morning and a halftime ceremony.

The final home game for the Duhawks will be on Wednesday night when the Central Dutch (14-7, 6-6) come to the AWC. Tipoff is 8:00 PM.
