BVU 68, Loras 65

The Beavers of Buena Vista University claimed an Iowa Conference victory on Wednesday night in the AWC after a hard-fought 40 minutes of hoops. The visitors outscored the Duhawks 39-31 in the second half to erase a five point halftime deficit. Loras fell to 2-10 in the IIAC with the loss while the Beavers moved to 8-3 with their sixth straight win.

Brian Gaughan picked up where he left off on Saturday and scored 15 first half points on 5-of-7 shooting from long distance. He would finish with a Loras-high 15 points. The Beavers countered with the perimeter shooting of Jeff Janssen, who went 3-of-4 from long distance, 6-of-9 overall, and made a pair of free throws to lead all scorers with 17 points. He knocked down all three of his 3-pointers in the second half.

A Nathaniel Smith free throw with 11:30 to go gave the Duhawks a six point lead at 53-47, but the Beavers began to chip away. After a Michael Elming layup and an Alex Savage steal on the inbounds pass, Loras' lead was quickly down to 56-55.

Later, Smith gave the Duhawks some momentum and what would be their final lead of the game with an ‘and-1' effort with just under four minutes to go at 62-61.

A pair of Elming free throws put the visitors up 66-64, and Tim Kelly and Alex Cline missed shots before Ryan Coon cut the lead to 66-65 with a split from the free throw line. Wes Nordquist provided the final points of the game on a layup in traffic with three Duhawks in the neighborhood with just 23.7 seconds to go. After a pair of Cole Darrow missed free throws, Loras still had a chance to tie.

Tim Kelly made an extra pass to Alex Cline on an inbounds play to the right corner for a last-second 3-point attempt. Cline's effort was just a touch strong, and the Duhawks fell to 5-16 with the loss.

Next up for the Duhawks is a home date with the University of Dubuque. Tipoff is 4:00 PM on Saturday. The Duhawks will honor their seniors prior to the game and will also welcome back their alumni on Saturday for the annual alumni game and halftime recognition.
