The Loras College wrestling team scored 37.5 team points on Saturday in Mount Vernon, Iowa at the Matman Invitational. Joe Butler and Joe Wood represented Loras with a pair of top six finishes.
At 125-pounds Pat Pfantz was seeded second and won his first match, 13-4. Seventh seeded Jimmy Gotto won a 9-4 decision over Pfantz for his first loss of the day. In the wrestlebacks, Pfantz answered with a 4-2 decision to advance, but lost to Carl Deluca of UW Oshkosh, 14-4.
Brian Cullen lost a decision in his opening round match at 133-pounds before pinning Mitch Hood of Cornell College. Cullen took his second loss of the day in his next match when he was pinned.
At 141-pounds Chris Reed and Sean Raddatz took to the mat for the Duhawks. Each lost their first round match and headed to the wrestlebacks. Reed lost a close 6-4 decision and Raddatz bounced back with a 12-1 major win. He fell 5-4 in his final match of the day to Dylan Schaffer of UW LaCrosse.
Joe Wood entered the 149-pound bracket seeded seventh. He won a pair of major decisions to remain in the hunt for the title before Luther's Stephan De La Cruz beat him, 9-1. He didn't return to the mat, but a pair of defaults after his two wins had him sixth in the standings.
Four Duhawks entered at 157-pounds. Griffin Weihe, Russ Gossen, and Mike Gossen each lost their opening round matches. Chris Gansen won his first match 3-2. In the second round, he lost to third-seeded Dale Handley. Russ and Mike Gossen each lost their first matches in the wrestlebacks. Weihe and Chris Gansen were paired up against one another, with Gansen claiming the win. He would advance further through the wrestlebacks with a 3-1 win and was halted by eighth-seeded James Lewis, 2-0. Gansen finished 3-2 on the day.
Unseeded Mitch Gansen and Tom Gross were Loras' entrants at 165-pounds. Each went 1-1 in their first two matches, falling to seeded wrestlers. Gross' day ended with his loss, as he forfeited his first wrestleback. Gansen won two more times, 11-2 and 10-6 before third-seeded Joey Favia ended his day.
Joe Butler won his first two matches at 174-pounds and his first two in the wrestlebacks to reach four wins on the day. Butler won three decisions and a forfeit and lost a pair of major decisions before reaching the fifth place match. He finished fifth with a forfeit after Coe's Scott King was forced out of the tournament earlier.
At 197-pounds, the Duhawks sent out Ryan Ward. Ward lost a decision in his first match and followed with an 8-5 loss in the wrestlebacks.
Loras will be at home on Wednesday night when they start their stretch of home events and Iowa Conference duals. Simpson College will be in the Graber Sports Center for a 7:00 PM dual and Saturday the Duhawks will host the annual Flash Flanagan Open in Graber.
