Central 81, Loras 73

 

Central College was 10 free throws better than the Duhawks on Wednesday night in an IIAC matchup, going 25-for-28 from the charity stripe. Both teams made eight 3-pointers and they were nearly identical from the field – Loras going 25-for-61 and Central 24-for-59.

 

Tim Kelly and Brian Gaughan knocked down long distance shots on Loras' first two possessions and Loras took an early lead. At the midway point of the first half, the teams were tied at 16-16. The Dutch opened a ten point lead before the Duhawks cut it back down to two points at 30-28. The hosts promptly went on an 8-0 run to close the first half to take a 38-28 lead into the locker room.

 

The Duhawks outscored the Dutch in the second half 45-43 and held a 55-51 lead with 10 minutes to play. Gaughan knocked down three free throws at the 7:19 mark to give Loras their final lead of the night at 62-61. The Dutch had 20 more points in them over the final seven minutes – including all 10 of their free throw attempts.

 

Individually, Kelly finished with 17 points on 7-of-9 shooting and a team high seven rebounds. Gaughan and Taylor Baxter each finished with 12.  

 

Central scored 20 second chance points and won the battle on the glass 45-31.

 

Loras is now 4-10, 1-4 in the IIAC. The Wartburg College Knights (7-8, 1-5) come the AWC for a 4:00 PM tipoff on Saturday afternoon.
