Dubuque 65, Loras 63

The Loras College men's basketball team lost to the University of Dubuque Spartans on Wednesday night at the Stoltz Center 65-63. Dan Pawelski scored a team high 19 points to lead the Duhawks, who fell to 3-9, 0-3.

A closely contested and physical first half saw the largest lead reach six points by the Spartans with five minutes to go. A late push by Loras on offense – led by Brian Gaughan's back-to-back three pointers – put the Duhawks in front 25-23. A Ryan Coon layup and a pair of free throws by the Spartans sent the teams to their locker rooms at 27-25 in favor of the Duhawks.

As slow as the Spartans offense finished the first half, they were equally as fast to start the second. Dubuque built a 40-33 lead in the first 5:20 of the second half on their way to what turned into a 14-point lead with 5:30 to go.

Loras fought all the way back to within two points late – but couldn't reclaim the lead. The Duhawks closed the game on an 18-6 run.

Brian Gaughan and Tim Kelly reached double figures with 11 points each. They combined to shoot 8-of-16 overall and 4-of-7 from long distance.

Both teams made nine first half field goals and 13 second half field goals.

Dubuque turned the ball over just five times in the game – and just once in the second half.

Loras won the rebounding margin 39-26.

The Duhawks will host the Cornell Rams (2-11, 0-4) at 4:00 PM in the AWC on Saturday afternoon as each team tries to crack the win column in IIAC play.
